Heliophilia opens at RARO On-site Projects

Writer: Louise Ward MorrisLouise Ward Morris

My first solo exhibition in Barcelona, titled Heliophilia, has opened at RARO On-Site Projects!

Developed from my arts-council funded research into Liquid Crystal Pixels, Heliophilia looks at our relationship with the screen from distinct perspectives: manufacturing and consumption; screen dependency and the body; the infrastructure of the screen; and our desire for light and the sun.

The screen defines the lives of cultures across the globe today, and while we often fail to look beyond the information displayed on our phone, TV or computer, the screen's materiality defines what we see much like the thickness of paint on a canvas or the selection of alloys in a bronze.

With its warm, inviting glow, the screen is the contemporary reworking of an eternity of human communication through light - from the Han Dynasty's shadow puppetry 2000 years ago and European medieval stained glass windows to the 17th century invention of the projector and modern-day cinema. Comprising millions of pixels, we are blinded by the light of the screen as we are blinded by the light of the sun.

The show is on from the 27 September to 26 October at RARO On-site Projects, Carrer de Jaume Giralt, 49, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona.
