Heliophilia & Untitled (5CB)

Heliophilia and Untitled (5CB) are sculptures comprising matrices of handmade liquid crystal pixels that harness the technology of LCD screens and are animated by a pulsing electric current or the energy from the sun.
With its warm glow, the screen is the contemporary reworking of an eternity of communication with light, such as Han Dynasty's shadow puppetry and stained-glass windows. Heliophilia and Untitled (5CB) study the changing translucency in a pixel; its spatial arrangement and temporality in a matrix; how it modulates light, creates reflections and casts shadows; and how these characteristics converge upon a glass surface to create a unique aesthetic quality.
The project is funded by Arts Council England and Artists Information Network and has been developed during an artists' residency at Fabra I Coats in Barcelona.
